The Fear of Spending Money: A Sign of a Poverty Mindset

In the Name of God, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful

Date: September 2, 2026

Sometimes having money does not necessarily mean having a wealthy mindset. A person may have a good income but still be afraid to spend money because they fear that one day their money will run out and they will become poor.

God tells us that even when a person has a treasure of blessings and wealth, they may still avoid using it because of the fear of becoming poor.

I had this mindset myself for many years. For example, I had a beautiful pencil, but I did not use it. I would buy clothes that I loved, but I would keep them in my suitcase for so long that the color of the fabric would turn yellow, and eventually I would lose the opportunity to enjoy those clothes.

There were so many beautiful clothes that I bought but did not wear because I was afraid they would be used up, damaged, or lost.

Then I became familiar with universal principles and the importance of building powerful beliefs. I understood that in order to grow our minds and move toward our desires, we must begin to live our new beliefs in action.

Overcoming the Fear of Spending

I started traveling.

I spent a significant part of the money I had on traveling and staying in four-star hotels—hotels that I could afford at that time.

For me, this was not simply about traveling.

It was a practical exercise in overcoming the fear that:

“If I spend my money, I will become poor.”

Every time I did it, my belief became stronger. Interestingly, each time I took this step, I felt stronger and more prosperous. My thinking became richer, and my perspective on life began to change.

I started preparing the best food for myself, like a princess. In reality, I was filling the inner gaps within myself.

My Experience with Not Spending and a Poverty Mindset

At one point in my life, I married someone who was in a very good financial situation. However, whenever my husband traveled for a long business trip, I would neither eat good food nor wear the beautiful clothes I had.

I would save the money so that my husband would admire me and say that I was such a good wife because I did not spend money.

Today, I understand that this behavior came from fear and a scarcity mindset.

Beliefs We Carry from Childhood

Throughout my childhood, I witnessed my father, despite being in a very good financial situation, telling my mother:

“Do not spend the money. Save it for a rainy day.”

I heard this sentence again and again.

“A rainy day.”

“Money is difficult to earn.”

“Money should not be spent.”

These words gradually became my beliefs.

I witnessed my father’s financial situation, and later his income dramatically decreased and eventually reached zero. My childlike mind concluded:

“If I spend money, one day I may lose everything.”

That is how a scarcity belief was created in my mind.

Even though I was always working, I felt that I never had enough money.

I was always looking for ways to become wealthy, but because I did not have healthy beliefs about wealth, I often had inappropriate ideas about how to create money.

Practicing Faith Through Action

By the grace of God, I learned to focus my attention on changing my beliefs and doing the best I could for myself and my life every day.

For me, faith was not just a thought or a sentence. I needed to experience it through action.

During a short period when I was working on my beliefs, I was able to create money and use that money to migrate to a new country.

What was even more interesting was that during my first ten days in the new country, I was able to double that money.

This experience strengthened my belief in my ability to create wealth, and my financial growth continued.

The Results of Growing an Abundance Mindset in My Life

I moved from a shared home where several people lived together into an independent two-bedroom home, even though the price was twice as much.

I told myself:

“If the God who brought me here when I had nothing can increase my daily sales and profits in this new country, then the same God can bring even more blessings and abundance into my life.”

I lived this belief through action.

I had dreamed of buying a new pair of shoes after two years. I went and bought them.

I started preparing high-quality food for myself without being afraid of spending. I saw how more opportunities and income began entering my life, and this increased my faith even more.

I bought the dishes and household items that I needed.

I was once someone who simply dreamed of being able to eat good food. Today, I have reached a place where I invite my friends to the best restaurants.

Wealth Is More Than the Amount of Money

Today, I understand that wealth is not only the amount of money we have in our bank account.

Wealth is also the way we see life.

If our inner world is full of fear, scarcity, and worry, even having a lot of money may not make us feel wealthy.

But when we build a belief in abundance within ourselves, we learn to use the blessings we have, enjoy life, value ourselves, and live responsibly.

The goal is not to spend money without thinking.

The goal is to eliminate the fear of spending.

Money should serve life—not make our lives serve the fear of running out of money.

I learned that if I love something and I can afford it, I should allow myself to use and enjoy it.

Wear beautiful clothes.

Eat good food.

Travel.

Make my home beautiful.

Value myself.

And most importantly, believe that abundance can continue.

Conclusion

If you have noticed that even though you have money, you are afraid to spend it, perhaps it is time to look at your beliefs about money.

Ask yourself:

What am I afraid of?

Do I truly believe that money can come back into my life?

Do I believe that I deserve the best?

Do I allow myself to enjoy the blessings I have today?

Sometimes the greatest financial transformation in our lives does not begin with increasing our income. It begins with changing our beliefs about money and abundance.

I started this journey from fear and scarcity, and through practice, awareness, and faith in action, I moved toward abundance.

And I am still learning, growing, and building stronger beliefs every day.

Believe that you can.

Practice what you believe.

And then live it through your actions.
